Is CityCenter in trouble?

Dubai World (co-owners of the CityCenter project) are suing their partners (MGM MIRAGE) for mishandling the project.

Ouch......and MGM now has BOTH Senator Harry Reid and Senator John Ensign personally calling up bank CEOs to encourage them to loan them that extra billion to finish up the project.... If those two are working together, you know there is some serious trouble....

Aside from the article I would say it is almost certainly in trouble. I think desperately selling off Treasure Island really showed their hand.

But even when they get it built, which I'm assuming they will, I would hate to be opening doors now. I think things are looking up a little, but I just don't see where the excitement is with CityCenter. "Oooh, a great big hotel complex is opening up where all the buildings look like the buildings currently in my city and all the hotel rooms look like the rooms at the Hilton!"

    Really?

    Who cares.

It just confirmed what i tought about MGM, since it got to big buying evertything that is for sale in Vegas, they lost their perspective.
the de-theming of casinos was a major mistake, why did people form all over the world come over (?) it was for the madness, the pirates and egyptian theme (etc). Now it is all lounges, standard hotels and architecture that you can see anywhere. Dull.
They overreached and made their hotels/casinos all alike, Why stay at the Luxor, TI and others if you can have the same somewhere else?

Im booking a trip to vegas (willing to spend some $$ on this trip) and I can't pick between Bellagio or the Wynn . Which one do you like better? why?

PS: Also, is the Bellagio still a quality resort as when it first opened since MGM bought it (because of cheap renovations etc.)I just hope that its not just being used as MGMs money machine.

With the level of service, quality of materials and amenities, and size of the rooms, The Wynn/Encoreplex wins hands down. Bellagio is a fine property, but does not compare to Wynn. the location is the only thing better concerning Bellagio. IMHO
Just knowing that Bellagio is an (big corporation) MGM property sort of lessens its charm.

Which ever you choose, please use one of the links below to make your reservation. It will help VegasTaT stay alive and well.

      Thanks, MA

      Wynn Las Vegas

I agree, Wynn is the winner. Bellagio was of the highest quality when Steve Wynn owned it. Since MGM's ownership they've removed the qualitative components piece by piece and replaced them with the "modern" plain and emptyness like what they've done to the Mirage. If you want unique quality and asthetic beauty you almost have to go to a Wynn property to find those things.

Well said Cestmoi the whole charm of Vegas was the themes. I remember my first trip to Vegas in 2000 The hotels blew me away the individual themes were amazing ! now its all the same and its getting worse !Vegas is killing itself and everyone can see it plan as day except for MGM and the other money greedy developers, as for City Center they need to stop work immediately and wait till the market recovers ! What good is a new City where no one can afford or get the finance to live !Wake up MGM !

CESTMOI took the words right out of my mouth. I work with these tourists every day and the sentiment is the same: "Why did they change this casino? This looks like all the others now. What were they thinking?" The last thing we need is MORE of the same in this city. Unfortunately, mistakes have been made that can probably never be undone. We could again remodel/revamp or even rebuild lost unique architecture, but the stigma of this failed idea to make Vegas "hip" is very thick and the morale among locals and people who were once proud of this city is tragically low. You can bet Boyd and others are kicking themselves for short-sighted ideas and run-of-the-mill corporate thinking. The Stardust, for one example, was still at least turning a profit and had a unique draw. All this money could have been used in a VERY different and unique way; aesthetically, amenity-wise, and historically. Now what good is that land doing them...

KVBC.com News Ch 3 Las Vegas has stated......
MGM Mirage Inc. says it has made a $200 million equity contribution due Friday to its $8.6 billion CityCenter development on the Las Vegas Strip -- including the payment that should have been made by Dubai World.

The company said in a release Friday that the payment should allow construction to continue on the casino, condo and hotel development, which is to start opening later this year.

MGM Mirage said $800 million in equity contributions are still necessary to access a credit facility that funds the project.

Prediction on the present City Center situation.
The Harmon and the Veer Towers will never be completed. The Harmon will be torn down and the space will used as overflow parking. The Veer towers will be empty shells like the new tower at Ceasars is. The Veer units will never be lived in. The Aria,Vadara and Mandarin will be completed and eventually sucessful.
The English language will have a new expression. The term 'City Center' will mean poor planning on large real estate developments.

Can someone please tell me if Mr. Christopher Milam deposited his 60 million dollars to acquire the land rights to the former 27 acre Wet-n-Wild sight on LV blvd? He needed to have the money deposited by March 31, 2009 to Archon Corp. Big story here. Here is the agreement filed with the SEC: http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/812482/000119312508259937/dex991.htm

I live in the UK and have visited Vegas seven of the previous eight years, for holidays. I can't wait to see the CityCenter complete, but reading the posts here it could turn out to be the equivalent of the UKs Millenium Dome fiasco. Shame, too early to judge but lets hope the interior has something special to offer than the overpowering sunblocking 'In Yer Face' towers.
