Canoes at CityCenter?
OK, what are all these canoes doing at CityCenter? I have received many emails and comments about the photo with the canoes.
The canoes and other water vessels are parts of an art installation by Nancy Rubins
According to MGM's press release:
"...Measuring 40 feet tall, 50 feet wide and 70 feet long, Rubins’ work of art at CityCenter will be a colorful composition of numerous rowboats, kayaks, canoes, small sailboats, surfboards, windsurf boards, jet skis, paddle boats, catamarans and other small river and ocean vessels that are finessed into a gravity defying form that is both delicately balanced and precisely engineered."

Here is an example of her work:

I (for one) do not care for this art form. Looks like a future home to pigeons and mosquito nests to me.
thoughts???

I agree with you. Did the artist not get the memo that we live in the middle of the desert, thereby rendering a piece like this rather irrelevant? Lake Mead ain't THAT close!

It looks cool from above, crap up close. I guess the whole glass flowers deal got a little overplayed?

Ah....canoes....I thought that is what I saw but didn't want to actually admit it.... Doesn't really seem like the type of art you would expect at CityCenter.....this reminds me more of that place in Texas with the half-buried Cadillacs jutting up out of the ground.......

I saw that, and figured that is what it was, but due to the distance, I couldn't tell for sure. MGM made a big deal, about spending $100 million or something like that, on art for the CC project. Perhaps MGM and their shareholders would have been better served by, investing this money on inspections instead, so that the project and all of its towers could have been constructed properly and in their entirety as the project architects fully intended them to be built, instead. But hey, what do I know, I'm just a fool, holding tons of stock, of a company on the verge of filing bankruptcy.

i really like this piece and as resident of las vegas and as a spouse of an employee of the city who is trying to get the city to invest more in public art i really applaud mgm for contributing to the culture enrichment of this city. Art and culture is something this city needs and there are a lot of people working really hard to bring that to the forefront here for the residents (not the tourists) i have seen this place change drastically and believe that we are on the way to becoming a real cultural hub in this world. So as a person who resides and loves this city yes it is very exciting to see this project come to life.

Bah in 2011 when this artwork will be sunburned and the colors faded away they will put some stupid fountain instead.
This whole city-center thing is ridiculous.
With all the hotel openings i wonder how long it will take to recoup the investment. Room rate wars will for sure start at a certain time this year
