Harrah's Giant Wheel - Lucky Seven?

Will the seventh proposed location for a giant observation wheel be lucky seven? Maybe. As most of you already know, there have been six failed locations for a giant wheel in Las Vegas. These are from two wheel-dealers, Voyager and The Great Wheel Corp. Voyager's concepts all have a large structure encasing the hub. This structure houses nightclubs and restaurants.  The Great Wheel Corp's designs have simple hub designs. So, based on the rendering, it looks like Harrah's is working with The Great Wheel Corp on this project.

The project calls for the abandonment of the access road the separates the Flamingo and O'Sheas.  That street will become an outdoor promenade lined with multi-storied clubs and restaurants which lead to the wheel at the end (near the monorail crossing).  This causes another issue; pedestrians won't be able to see the wheel from many vantage points with all the tall strip-close buildings in the way.

All of this is pending financing which is pretty much a joke right now.

As you can see in the rendering (below):
  • O'Sheas gets a face lift (I hope they spruce it up inside too)
  • The big-box building in front of Imperial Palace gets to be a billboard (that building houses IP's sports book, and the world's worst buffet - yuk).
  • Structures are added to the Flamingo side of the promenade.
  • Structures are removed from the IP side of the promenade.
  • People are crossing Las Vegas Blvd as speed-blurry cars whiz by.
So, if they implode the parking structure, and what we're seeing is a new building, where will 2/3 of Flamingo's customers park?
How do you all feel about the de-theming of IP's frontage?

Not so sure I like this idea.
I like IP because the table stakes are low which also why I like Casino Royale, but IP really should be raised in my opinion.

    Here is my opinion:

First of all the wheel most likely be built because it is a wonderful idea to entertain tourists, but..

Harrah's is NOT the place to put it!!!
Goodness!! DONT PUT IT SOMEWHERE THAT THE HOTEL MIGHT AND HOPEFULLY BE IMPLODED IN A FEW YEARS!!!

My guess is that this wheel might be placed in Station's Viva Resort because it is not only new hotel, but the wheel flows with the ultra modern design and its outside the strip where guests have more of an open view!!

I CANT WAIT FOR IT TO ARRIVE!! My guess is sometime around 2013 when economic conditions improve.

I don't think Stations would want the Harrahs wheel on one of their properties. Also, Harrahs owns all the property under the tram.

Well if this holds then the past talk of all this getting torn down is out the window also. I am a Flamingo fan you can have the IP.

I kind of hope the build it. The Vegas projects have been getting more and more conservative lately, well design-wise at least. To me Las Vegas is all about these crazy ideas that people actually build.

Things looks differently to me after looking at the details of this project's fantasy.
First, if the wheel is anywhere even close to the height it appears, the wheel would be visible from every part of the promenade as well as from the street. It also appears that O'Shea would be a complete tear down as the roof line going back toward the wheel is completely changed. I hate the IP street front now so the updated billboard type front would be a great improvement. It may also be possible that you are seeing the wheel between the parking garage and the new building so that may be a non-issue.
I would give this project about a 10% chance of being anywhere near approaching reality but even if no wheel was built it would be nice to see some updating to the area that is highlighted.

It is completely open air, which is a bad idea in Las Vegas. Not sure what the advantages are when compared with other indoor malls such as no easy access to the casinos and resort attractions. The Giant Wheel is hardly an interesting attraction. If you're not into it, then what the heck!!! It's a bit of a road to nowhere. They should revisit the concept so it'll make sense to tourists.

If they can develope the backside of the strip and make this alley attractive and open then I htink this is a good idea. But what kind of bars are going t fill this location? probably the kind of stuff that's located int he big balls plaza between harrah's and IP

I've never been a fan of the IP or its boxing building out front.... to me, changing it to a giant billboard would be essentially putting an ad over what is ALREADY a giant white (blank) billboard.

I really do like the idea of the revamped access road becoming a full-blown pedestrian mall. And, you don't have to worry about car traffic, etc. as you move around there.

The ferris wheel's proposed location looks pretty dubious to me, though. I honestly don't know what sort of glamorous views they expect from placing it amongst casino resort parking structures and the even more unflattering back loading docks of the hotels.

although i like the idea for a wheel, i dont like the place that they have chose to put it. harrah's and IP are hotels that within the next few years will hopefully be imploded to make room for more modern resorts. i say wait for those hotels to be built and then place the wheel there. and also, is this a good place for an observation wheel? it would have to be tall enough for people to be able to see over the hotels surrounding it (harrahs, IP, Flamingo, and even the venetian hotels. i am all for the growth of las vegas and i think that an obsercation wheel will help bring more tourism to the city

Like others have mentioned earlier, that back location is NOT a likely spot to construct such a huge attraction. Wouldn't it be more prudent to go ahead with the implosion of IP (it's been rumored for years) and perhaps place the wheel where IP used to be. Add a better street-front casino (always good to encourage foot traffic)and then build a newer hotel and pool area to the rear? The wheel in behind there would not offer very flattering views of the Strip (as already mentioned by others) but a wheel directly facing the Strip would.....

In my opinion they should blow up the IP for a new hotel with the mall attached to it. Can somebody answer this question? What is a ferris wheel doing in the middle of Las Vegas anyway?!?!

I don't even like the wheel. Who is going to want to ride this thing? It's all about getting people into the casinos, not out. It looks like it is in a back alley which says how much they really like the idea. The IP will be torn down someday, but then again, in this economic environment, Harrahs might divest some of the properties. You never know.

Seems like the IP is already being torn down from the inside out. Ever since Harrahs has taken over the IP, customer service and even the casino itself has been going down the toilet. Its sad because many employees that have been there for years have been let go. Anyways for the wheel I think it should be placed somewhere else. I thought they were going to build an events center back there where the apartments used to be. Harrahs should be more worried about taking care of it's employees and other properties before they decide to venture into another project.

Unless they make this project to be like the recent constructions in LV, I say let it die. Back in the 90's they tried to make LV into a "family friendly" destination. And we all know how well this worked. Remember the MGM theme park, or the water park. Circus Circus is the only family themed resort left in Vegas and is long over due for an implosion! I think this is reverting back to the same type of project. And yes I saw the renderings and the concept, but just think this is a tacky idea.

I like the idea of transforming that alley into something nice, but a giant wheel just doesn't seem attractive. I don't like the Voyager wheels, but they're nicer looking than this one. As for IP, they should do away with it and Harrahs and make that clustered space into a new open massive hotel, something like City Center's nice modern hotels.

I must be the only one who actually likes Imperial Palace. I hope it stays until I can afford to stay at better hotels.

I'm not thrilled about the wheel idea, but it's cool to hear about something new. I'm not sure what the alley would have to offer that the other places don't already have. Someone mentioned it will probably be like the area between Harrah's and IP, which I hate. If that's what it'll be like, then forget it.

Lot of you guys wrote it that is not at the right spot and is tacky. You guys are right. I think the owners should wait for a while to put the wheel in or not if they don,t have the money.
