Tropicana's Major Makover is Underway
The $100 million makeover of our beloved Tropicana is well underway. Finally, the ugliness of the 1996 exterior makeover will be removed.
The "theme"of the project is South Beach Florida Deco (sounds great to me).
This remodel will encompass the entire resort (inside and out). Remodeled will be the casino, restaurants, lounges, pool area, and guest rooms along with a new center casino bar, a new sports book and new poker room.
The bridge connecting the casino with the back of the property is getting a white marble floor. While the pool area is getting all new walks and decks.
They are also planning to extend the bridges form MGM Grand and Excalibur right into the casino.
I freshened the Tropicana page and took some construction photos.
I'm glad they aren't going to implode the old girl. We need to preserve as much of old Las Vegas as we can.
Thoughts???

I think it's great to do a makeover instead of building new. I think everyone has seen that sometimes its good to build new, but sometimes there's not much to be gained from it, especially for a middle (to bottom) of the line property.
The rooms look nice, like City Center rooms, but not like Wynn rooms.

Will they extend the ceilings higher cause that was always my problem at Tropicana. I never liked how low the ceilings are.

I loved the Trop before it went into the toilet. It was the first place I stayed at back in 1994. I'm very excited they are freshening it up. Hope they don't change the pool area to much as I always thought it had a great personality.

A few questions:
-Are the Garden rooms included in the renovations?
-Is the Tiffany ceiling being removed for good or just for the renovation and then being put back up?

Yes, the garden rooms are staying and getting remodeled (yeah). As for the Tiffany ceiling, it will not have a place in the new resort...(sorry) I hope someone buys it and re-installs it somewhere in Vegas.

Sure glad that Tropicana is going to stay with us...the place was so cool in the early 90s with the South Seas theme (remember those giant Easter Island heads they had out front?)....The pool area is actually quite nice--I hope they just spruce it up and keep the same overall look. I am wondering if they still intend to demolish the old 1957 "Garden room" wings or refurbish them instead. Guess we'll see.....

I'd love to see the Trop succeed. I love the old school garden rooms with balconies, and the oversized tubs in the Island rooms. My biggest turnoff was the Tiffany tower. There was nothing special at all about those rooms and they are supposed to be the best. No matter where I stayed at the Trop though, I always remember the doors to the rooms slamming and keeping me awake.

I am also glad that is not going tear it down. I hate old buildings that are gone. Makes it historic. But I like makeovers. I am not happy W/ mgm put citycenter where boardwalk is. Some were else. love the the building. Hope Trop. is not a boardwalk. Happy again trop. is making a make over

I'm glad to hear that the Tropicana is getting a makeover. There's too many stale corporate mega-resorts on the Strip and it's good that the Tropicana is staying and being refreshed. We always stay Downtown but will make a point of staying at the Trop when the makeover is complete. I almost booked at the Flamingo for our January trip but then I found out that Harrah's owned it. Forget that!

When will they actually start the renovation. Who is the main contractor.

It great to see them redoing the Trop and leaving the building up enough with tearing down the old. Hopefully the new prices won't be that high

I stayed at the Trop from Jan 25-29, 2010. Outside of the renovated hallway connecting the casino to the Island Tower and the Paradise Tower being closed, there was not a whole lot of construction taking place. And the casino was dead. The card tables the front was half full at best and the poker room was closed. Is the renovation being delayed due to the economy? In fact most of the hotel casinos were dead. The busiest were MGM, Caesars, and Bellagio. And they were half full at best.
