The New Tropicana (Slow but Sure)

I've uploaded some new photos of the Trop's makeover. I have a good (warm fuzzy) feeling about this remodel. It seems the designers actually have good taste.

There was a walled-off area beneath the back half of the Tiffany canopy that covers the pit. The gap I peeked through was too narrow to get a good photo. What I saw was a worker polishing a pure white marbles floor (the same material as can be seen on the bridge to the Paradise Tower)

The escalators in the round area at the back of the casino have been replaced with new ones.

The whole casino smelled of drywall mud (yummy, the smell of construction).

Nice to see this grand old lady is getting a much needed makeover. I have fond memories of this hotel, and the former Trop golf club, going back to the 1960's.

Well the passage between the two towers certainly looks nice.....all of those irritating kiosks selling cheap trinkets are gone. The removal of the Tiffany ceiling still does not seem a good idea--it was unique and classy. Let's hope they have a plan to make something special--and not another "Luxor" remodel.....

The Tiffany ceiling is anything but classy, maybe in the 1890's

So glad this joint got saved from bankruptcy and is being updated. I still shed a tear over the demolition of the Stardust. I wish the more nostalgic resorts were still around. They just have a cool vibe. Can't wait till it's done so I can check it out

I too miss the Stardust. I've only been to the Trop once. And didn't stay long because my wife was grossed out by the place. I will be going without her in June and will have to give it another chance.

This looks fantastic. I wonder what the new sign is gonna look like and don't they have to replace the one on Las Vegas Blvd too? Here is my question, are they removing the older rooms and putting them in a tower or just updating those?

    Hi Nicci,

No new buildings here, all of the existing rooms will get a complete makeover (even the beloved garden rooms).

Ruffin (the new owner) is bringing a Gilley's back to Vegas. Gilley's is a country western bar. The original is in Houston. After Ruffin sold the New Frontier, Gilley's was destroyed with the rest of it.

Glad to hear that Gilleys is coming back to Vegas. One of my biggest regrets is that I never went in to the New Frontier. At least I'll have a chance to go to Gilley's

Quick question, this is the only place I've seen that the Tiffany piece will be removed. Where was this confirmed?

I've talked to several of the Tropicana's executives and they have all said that it was going. As much as I respect the piece, it will clash with their design plans.

There is a museum here in Orlando, FL of Tiffany's work, www.morsemuseum.org. If you contact them again maybe they would be interested in a donation.

I love this property! We stayed here for 7 years in a row, but then they stopped all of the "perks" such as the bird show, the free aerial show in the main casino, etc.... I use to love when they had all the birds out by the pool and you could walk up to them and "talk" to them. We will be out in May and will check in on the progress for sure!

Hope the owners know how eager the Las Vegas regulars are to see that this grand property is done properly. We have many fond memories of the Trop and are looking forward to returning...as we do every year. This was the first place we stayed..can't wait!

Three cheers for saving this gem. It's been on the demolition rumor list for years.

I've only stayed here once in 2006. Things were a bit tired, but I loved having my own lanai.

To I hope it finds a new o bad about the Tiffany ceiling going.home somewhere. Perhaps Main Street Station should pick it up.

I am excited to see the reaction of people to the finished product. I love shiny and new buildings, but with so much new construction in the past few years, I think people are going to really enjoy seeing that the Trop weathered the storm. Hopefully this will be the new trend, not that there are many left to renovate. . . People love a great renovation and this one looks like it's going to be grand!

drove by the other day and they were projecting very well-filmed adverts on the side of the hotel tower as if it were a huge drive-in-movie screen. it was an effective attention grabber in a very flashy area- a lot of people were stopping to point

I just stayed at the Tropicana this last June (2010) and had a great time. The room in the Paradise Tower was clean and well designed. The bath room remodel was classy and the flat screen TV was a welcome addition. The food facilities were limited but I look forward to future restaurant additions. The Italian restaurant seemed a little pricey considering they were just serving glorified pasta. The little deli was a lifesaver - open 24 hours/day and good food at a decent price.
I am glad the new owners are remodeling the Tropicana and not imploding it. I miss the older hotels and their memories of 'old' Vegas. (The Sahara and Riviera have just 'run out of gas'. The owners need some new ideas and attention to detail.)
If things continue as planned, I will be a regular at the Tropicana.
