The Arena Shell Game
Oscar Goodman wants to move the (pending) sports arena back to Symphony Park. The proposal goes before the planning commission this week.
The City did a little deal with Newland (the company that manages Symphony Park) and procured several parcels that were originally slated for Newland residential projects and the World Jewelry Center in exchange for a free parcel to Newland. Another win/win situation. The World Jewelry Center will get a new location within Symphony Park.
Since Symphony Park has direct access to freeways, this seems to be the best place for the Arena. putting it near the current City Hall would bring too much congestion to the downtown traffic (IMO), and putting it anywhere near or on The Las Vegas Strip would cause the worst gridlock this town has ever seen.

The location DOES seem a great place....but parking is sure going to be tight...most sports arenas are surrounded by a vast open lot--but the Symphony Park plot for the arena will not have much area left for parking once the arena itself is in place. Looking at the Thomas & Mack arena on satellite vs Symphony Park shows the situation......

They would almost have to set something up with the World Market Center and their HUGE parking garage. That would certainly help the situation (though I hope its not the only option for 20K spectators).
The outlet mall is a perfect example of how a poorly designed parking garage can ruin an experience.
