Updates, here we go
OK, it's been a while and many of you have written with your concerns. Thanks for writing.
So, with no excuses or explanations, I will resume the updates to the site and blog starting with a photo update of The Smith Center
There's much work to do on the site (as many of you well know) and I will be working on it more regularly.
Stay tuned.....

Hi Mark! Great to have you back. It's great to see that the first update is for the Smith Center. It is even more beautiful than I had imagined it would be. It is a new landmark for Vegas.

The Smith Center is a complete missed opportunity. Glad to see they are trying to design for longevity in terms of construction quality...but if celebrating "no EIFS" is one of the top merits of this facility...we're in trouble.
At what point will Las Vegas fully embrace the actual desert context and stop emulating other styles. The building's style feels trapped in time.
I simply do not understand how this aesthetic is an appropriate expression as one of the first major civic works of architecture in the 61 acres or city in general.
A sadly missed opportunity.

Brett, FYI,
The Smith Center Architect has said the precedent for the style is the Hoover Dam, for what that's worth. Otherwise, I agree somewhat with your viewpoint. I'm just glad the thing's not "Tuscany"!

Also- while you were gone, Sahara closed and Tropicana opened the new Nikki Beach club, among many other happenings around town.

I like the style of the Smith Center, It has a timeless feel to it, without being a replica of an existing structure. It also has a nice tie into the hoover dam.
Overall it's a pretty classy addition to the city.
Of course, it does take emulate other buildings, but every building does. Meaning, every building barrows elements and styles from previous buildings.
It seems you dislike a the art deco motif they went with.
I'm curious as to which style you would have liked them to go with. You mentioned designing it with a desert context. I'm not sure what that is.
I suspect you mean something a sort of a desert modern style, like in Palm Springs and much of Arizona.
Could you give an example of a theater or building you would have preferred it emulate?
I'm not sure Las Vegas has really defined an architectural style for it's self other than flashy and "over the top." (Maybe that's enough)
Where would you like the styles to head into the future?
Despite, how one feels about the Smith Center, it will definitely influence and help define Las Vegas’s image going forward.

I like the night photos...it would be cool if they changed the color of the lights at the top based on seasons, similar to Empire St Building in NYC and several buildings in Chicago.
Red, white and blue near July 4
Red and green around Christmas
etc...

I'm among those who think the Smith Center is quite beautiful. Much architecture that emulates the Art Deco style looks cheap and phony. This building, at least in the photos, looks substantial and like it's been there for 75 years.
I think this gives a sense of place and a feeling of continuity to a new neighborhood.

Although I'm excited for the purpose of this facility and it's location downtown, I still can't help but say it's the most aesthetically out of place building in our City. And that's saying something with pyramids, castles, villas and Frank Ghery within a few miles. They went out of their way to create an uptight, rigid building that is supposed to hold creative works of all kinds. This would be more at home at an East Coast University, but couldn't be more inappropriate for downtown Las Vegas.
Just one architect's opinion.
